Resolutions for Retirees

Look forward to your resolutions
Look forward to your resolutions.

Ah, New Year’s Day – The holiday that comes with a lot of pressure. “A new year, a new you!” or so they say. With a few resolutions you’re supposed to correct all of your character flaws and meet all of your goals because the calendar has flipped to January. But, hey, no pressure…

Let’s forget about all of that. Instead, let’s think about New Year’s resolutions as the simple ideas they really are… What do you want to achieve in the next 365 days? What steps can you start taking today to be happier, healthier, or more active? In other words, what will make you more of the person you want to be? (When you think of it that way, it takes some of the pressure away, doesn’t it?)

Here are some ideas for inspiration:

  1.   Eat (and drink) better.

Let’s be honest… We’ve all made this resolution in one form or another in the past, like “Drink less wine,” or “Stop eating the entire cake in one sitting.” Even with the best intentions, it doesn’t always pan out like we intend though.

But here’s the thing… You can set yourself up to succeed by making SMART goals. SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-based. For example, don’t say “I’m going to eat healthier.” Instead, say “I’m going to eat one serving of vegetables at dinner every evening this month.” Don’t say “I’m going to drink more water.” Instead, say “I’m going to drink 8 glasses of water every day this week by taking my water bottle with me everywhere I go.”

  1.   Exercise more.

Did you know that Carolina Village has 1.4 miles of connected hallways? That means you can walk all the halls and never have to step foot outside. If you did that, you’d walk approximately 3,500 steps. Carolina Village also has exercise classes and gyms open 24/7 for residents and those on the waiting list. (Email our Life Enrichment Director or visit our Fitness page for more information.) Find a physical activity you enjoy and do more of it this new year.

  1.   Make new friends.

Countless studies have found that our social connections are incredibly important to our overall sense of well-being. Remember how easy – and fun – it was to make friends as a child? But it can be difficult to meet new friends when we’re adults. (Introverts, I’m especially talking to you.) No worries! Carolina Village offers a full calendar of social activities that are always open to new people. Check the weekly activity calendar and set a goal to attend one or two events each week. If you’re feeling especially outgoing, join the Hospitality committee and become the welcoming friend to others that you’d want.

  1.   Improve your tech savviness.

Yes, technology can be intimidating. No, you’re not too old to learn how to use technology. (We have a 106-year-old resident who uses her iPad daily.) Plus, the Internet is a great way to stay connected with loved ones. Would you like to learn how to use The Village Hub, send email, use Skype, or join a social media site? Come to our Computer Club every second Tuesday of the month and ask those very questions!

  1.   Explore your local community.

Hendersonville is a beautiful mountain town with many local gems. Carolina Village often plans outings to local events and destinations. Check our app, The Village Hub, for all the latest information on trips and make plans to attend a few. You’ll learn about our community and you might meet new friends, too.

  1.   Review your will and/or estate plan.

Some resolutions are fun and others are simply important. Although it might not be fun to think about, it is important to review your estate plan and ensure that it reflects your wishes.

  1.   Record your memories.

You have so many stories. Why not write down some of those memories? You don’t have to be a great writer to write something that your loved ones will cherish for years – or generations – to come. Or record a video of you telling a favorite story, like how you met your spouse or your biggest adventure. Your loved ones will be able to hear the story in your own voice for years to come – and that’s a special gift.

New Year’s resolutions are really about living a life you love. And that’s what we’re all about at Carolina Village. If we can ever help you achieve your goals, please let us know. We’d love to help.

Have a happy, healthy new year!
